Day 2: Across North Dakota

Heading west in ND at midday. Sunny. Flat and vast landscape. Lots of farmland, not too many people. Towns dominated by grain elevators.

Had breakfast with a very nice young couple from Tokyo, Daisuke and Rika. Chatted in the lounge car with a retired couple, teachers from Cape Cod, heading to Spokane to visit their daughter. It’s easy to meet people on the train.

Learned more about last night’s 5 hour delay. Ghosts and dogs. Just west of the Twin Cities, a freight train was stopped on the single track we were on. The engineers had hit their 8 hour time limit for a day’s work and had to leave, making it a “ghost train.” A new crew wasn’t readily available and had to be rounded up (the “dog catcher crew”). So, we sat for 4 hours or so until the new crew arrived.
