I saw several of the many iconic landmarks and views in Los Angeles. On Tuesday night I enjoyed a Dodgers baseball game at Chavez Ravine with author and Lawrence University alum Tom Zoellner. A distinctive ball park in a beautiful setting.
Spent the day on Wednesday touring LA in a rented car. Started by heading west from Union Station on Sunset Boulevard through the Echo Park neighborhood, past busy streets and a dizzying array of businesses. Went to the Griffith Park Observatory, but the views of the skyline weren’t great because it was hazy. Then headed west on famous Mulholland Drive to the Getty Center art museum, an amazing contemporary architectural work on a hill with views of the Pacific, downtown, and the surrounding hills and freeways.
Next made a short stop at UCLA, then headed back east on Sunset Boulevard (much tonier in Westwood and Beverly Hills than the livelier, grittier Echo Park stretch of Sunset). Stopped in at the Original Farmer’s Market (since 1934), with a wide variety of produce and restaurants and an incredibly diverse mix of patrons. Ended the tour with a visit to the LA Central Library, a pyramid-topped, richly decorated architectural masterpiece from an earlier era. (I’ll do a separate post on the library.)
Finally, ate at a crepe restaurant in the departure hall of fabulous Union Station while waiting for the 10:00 p.m. departure of the Sunset Limited to New Orleans.
