Day 14: Continuing Through the South on the Crescent

The Crescent continued through the South all day Sunday, spending much of the day in a tunnel of greenery, with the view largely consisting of trees, bushes, fields, red soil, muddy rivers and small towns.

In the afternoon we stopped in Birmingham, traditionally the South’s leading industrial city, especially notable for steel production and for being a rail hub and manufacturer of rails and railroad cars. There are recently arrived factories too; we passed a large Honda plant.

In the afternoon we climbed gradually through the hills leading to Atlanta. Atlanta was founded as a railroad termination point (originally called “Terminus”), then became a convergence point for multiple railroads, but now freeways dominate the local transportation landscape.

Good to see that the Milwaukee Brewers beat Atlanta shortly before the train arrived there. Atlanta still needs to be penalized for stealing the Braves from Milwaukee.
