I visited the impressive Los Angeles Central Library on Wednesday. It was built in 1926 with Egyptian motifs, severely damaged by fire in 1986, then rebuilt with a new wing that doubled its capacity which fits in well with the original design. The rotunda and other rooms have murals depicting California history, and there’s currently an Ansel Adams photo exhibit depicting life in the LA area in the 1940s.
Last year’s bestselling book by Susan Orlean, “The Library Book,” described the rebuilding of the library in the aftermath of the fire along with histories of LA and of libraries.
