Day 13: New Orleans Bike Ride

Arrived in New Orleans early Saturday morning, around 12:40 a.m., about three hours behind schedule. New Orleans is a unique place. In what other American city would you pass a voodoo gift shop during the cab ride from the train station to your hotel? (The same establishment also offers tattoo and notary services.)

Rented a bike this morning. Even the bike rental place was unique. It looked like it was closed and maybe abandoned, but I saw a sign telling customers to ring some old bells hanging from the gate. A woman named Jane answered and got me a bike and gave me some good advice about where to ride.

In the morning, rode from the Lower Garden District through the Central Business District to the French Quarter and then east to the Faubourg Marigny District and along the levee towards Bywater, downriver from the Central Business District. Bicycling is a great way to see the city. Traffic in the central area moves slowly and you can take time to watch the people and appreciate the tremendous architecture. Riding on the levee provided good views of the city skyline, the river and boat traffic, and the engineering of the river control system. The city is flat, although there was a strong wind.
