Day 4: Seattle to Portland

Had a good stay in Seattle. It's changed a lot since the first time I was there when I worked for Amtrak in 1975. Then the economy was dominated by shipping, manufacturing (Boeing and others), and logging and lumber. That was pre-Microsoft, pre-Starbucks and pre-Amazon. Now technology companies and retailers dominate the economic scene, hip restaurants, coffee shops and art galleries are all around, and property values are soaring.

Took the Amtrak Cascades train from Seattle to Portland in the afternoon. Nice train; runs several times a day. Smooth ride; 3.5 hour trip; almost on time (10 minutes late). Scenic route, from the red-brick King Street Station in Seattle through Tacoma, along Puget Sound with the Olympic Mountains in the distance, past Mount Rainier, over the Columbia River and into impressive Union Station in Portland.
