Day 2: Heading to the Rockies

Left Havre, Montana right after dinner. The Rockies came into view as we headed across the plains. Beautiful views as we went through gently rolling hills at dusk, past winding streams and ranches, grazing cattle and deer, and through classic small western towns. Interesting note: Every town has several small casinos, in hotels, diners, convenience stores and even laundromats. The orange-red streak across the horizon behind the jagged mountain peaks at sunset was spectacular.

Had dinner with Ken and Linda Reid of Wenatchee, Washington, who are returning from a vacation trip to Milwaukee, Sheboygan and Green Bay (good choice). They're semi-retired. Ken works part-time at a radio station; Linda is a substitute teacher and writes for the local paper. Their son, Jason Reid, runs 2R Productions which has done documentaries about bicycling in China, mountain climbing, NFL kickers and other topics.

Here’s a 17-second video of the view from the train as we approached Malta, Montana. Probably not quite up to the standards of 2R Productions, but it will give you some sense of the terrain.
