Day 6: The Coast Starlight through Oregon

Left Portland on the Coast Starlight in the afternoon. Headed south through broad, lush green farmland with mountains in the distance on either side, past farms, ranches and orchards. Went through small towns with manufacturing companies along the tracks, many lumber-related (Northwest Door & Sash, Eugene Planing Mill, Imperial Floors).

Then we headed up into the Cascade Mountains, past rivers and lakes and through dense evergreen forests with snow beside the tracks.

Had dinner with James and Joan, retirees from Dallas, originally from Taiwan and Hong Kong, former residents of Wisconsin and Minnesota. James spent much of his career in IT. Very nice people, and very patriotic.
