Day 5: An Evening Walk in Portland

Spent the evening walking around Portland, from Willamette River to Pioneer Courthouse Square (center of downtown, surrounded by department stores and office towers) to the Pearl District, former warehouse and railyard area booming with hip new real estate developments.

Visited Powell's City of Books, the legendary bookstore. Covers one entire square block, with three levels and more than one million titles. Found the railroad section with the assistance of a very helpful staff member.

Also went to the Portland Outdoor Store, a traditional western wear store with Pendleton blankets, flannel shirts, plenty of denim and a wide array of cowboy boots. A reminder of Oregon's frontier past.
