Day 13: New Orleans: Garden District

Spent much of the afternoon on Saturday bicycling through the Garden District and Uptown neighborhoods. Block after block of architecturally interesting houses, mostly wood, with lots of intricate decorations and a variety of styles. Some were mansions, some modest, some middle class, but they were invariably fascinating and enjoyable.

Rode to Audubon Park (large park with old trees, Spanish moss, gardens, graceful paths and ornate benches) and also to Tulane University. Later, ended the day at a neighborhood restaurant, The Avenue Pub, on St. Charles Avenue. Enjoyed fried green tomatoes with shrimp remoulade, which I thought was a suitably Southern/New Orleans dish, and watched the streetcars clang by in the thick night air.
